Introduction
Reach & Rise: Orang Asli Empowerment Programme is committed to reaching out to and empowering Orang Asli students in Pahang through various educational and skill development activities. It aligns with the targets of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to Quality Education, Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Reduced Inequalities. The benefits of this program include enhanced educational opportunities, improved job prospects, and greater social inclusion for Orang Asli students, ultimately contributing to their overall well-being and community development.
Activities Conducted
Campus Visit
On 27 June 2024, the TAR UMT Pahang Branch hosted the first event under "Reach & Rise: Orang Asli Empowerment Programme". This event is designed to inspire and empower Orang Asli students. The event commenced at 9:30 am and continued until 1:00 pm, engaging 14 students from SMK Air Putih and SMK Gudang Rasau, accompanied by three of their teachers. The highlight of the day was a motivational talk titled “Embrace Your Journey: Proud, Resilient and Unstoppable” by Dr. Masni a/p Mat Dong, a TAR UMT Lecturer, an Icon Orang Asli and the recipient of the Merdeka Grant Award 2023. Dr. Masni's inspiring words encouraged students to embrace their unique paths and strive for excellence. Following the talk, attendees participated in various strategies and team building games, fostering camaraderie and collaboration. The day concluded with a campus tour, providing the students with a glimpse of university life and future opportunities. The Reach & Rise programme was a success, making a positive impact on the students and showing the university's dedication to supporting the Orang Asli community.
School Visit
On 15 August 2024, TAR UMT Pahang Branch conducted the "Reach & Rise: Orang Asli Empowerment Programme" at SMK Gambang. The event, held from 9:00 am to 11:00 am, was specially organized for 21 Orang Asli students who are currently studying at SMK Gambang. The program aimed to empower these students by boosting their confidence, resilience, and sense of pride in their cultural identity. It began with a warm welcome from Mr. Mohd Nizam Naqiyuddin Bin Ahmad Sobri, a lecturer at TAR UMT. This was followed by an inspiring motivational talk by Dr. Masni a/p Mat Dong, an Icon Orang Asli and recipient of the Merdeka Grant Award 2023 to encourage the students to embrace their unique journeys and strive for success. Following the talk, the students participated in strategies and teambuilding games designed to foster teamwork, critical thinking, and personal growth. The event concluded with a closing ceremony, leaving the participants not only inspired but also better equipped to overcome challenges and pursue their aspirations.
